Triplet Formation and Triplet‐Triplet Annihilation Upconversion in Iodine Substituted Non‐Orthogonal BODIPY‐Perylene Dyads

BODIPY-perylene dyads have emerged as useful metal free sensitizers for triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTAUC), these are capable of efficient triplet generation via spin-orbit charge transfer intersystem crossing (SOCT-ISC). This important route to formation requires in which two moieties oriented perpendicular each other. In this contribution, we give a deeper insight on the behavior established dyads, where dihedral exhibits non-orthogonal dyad geometry. The with and without iodine investigated using femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) nanosecond (ns-TA) spectroscopy. concurrent decay singlet state (1CT) rise states both iodinated non-iodinated confirms SOCT-ISC main pathway despite altered geometry dyads. presence an atom BODIPY-moiety enables 2.6-times faster provides higher yield respect iodine. quantum ( ) is 8.4-times sample containing sensitizer perylene annihilator. energy rate (kTTET) ∼8×108 M−1 cm−1 TTAUC systems 1,4-dioxane.
